//Day 38 /18-04-22 /Doirani-Thessaloniki

Today it will be a short update. I arrived in Thessaloniki after 80 K cycling in the rain. The first 30K I cycled a secondary road straight ahead, it seems that turns was a concept that doesn’t exist. After the 30K I followed a small road. The views where ok, the road quality was ok but the rain today took away most of the cycling joy. You win some, you loose some some.

I arrived at Thessaloniki’s city borders some 15 K before my finale destination. Thessaloniki is Greece 2nd biggest city with just over  more then 1 million habitants, no surprise it took some time to get to the city center. In order to get to the center I followed mostly the train tracks, riding often opposite in one way streets. I arrived early at the apartment I rented for 2 nights. I dropped my lugage and paid the lady-owner who was eager to get paid and rode Black Horse to a Bike-shop to get it’s chain swapped and get a full-medical. The guy’s at the bikeshop were great, Black Horse was cared for,  I received an espresso whilst waiting. I’m happy to communicate Black Horse is still in perfect condition (although he fell this morning…). It was still raining when I returned the 6 K back through the city to the appartement. It kept raining (hard) for the rest of the day. No weather to stroll around and visit a city. I went to retrieve some cash and did some groceries, returned to the appartement, chilled,watched AA Gent wining the Belgian Cup until dinner time. I had dinner In a nearby restaurant called Sofis house where you can select at the counter out of a variety of dishes. The food was great, including a free dessert from the house from the excellent waiter.

Tomorrow the sun is expected to appear around 11 in the morning (with temperature rising to 25 the next couple of days), perfect timing from the sun to discover the city and maybe have a nice lunch overlooking the Gulf of Thessaloniki.

Lessons learned :
  • Also in Greece there are some mean MF dogs….but also some nice ones.
  • Porcupines seem to be the main animal road kills in Greece - I counted 6 today.
  • The apartment parking garage is in reality an empty shop.
  • Again, Europe please arrange that retrieving Euro’s in the eurozone is regulated to acceptable fees. Today I payed 2,5 euros to retrieve Euro’s out of a Eurozone ATM.
Song of the day :  When the rain begins to fall - Jermaine Jackson and Pia Zadora

//Day 67 /17-05-22 /Banja Luka-Dubica

I left beautiful Banja Luka after breakfast. I did it sleep that good due to late fire work….The sun was shining but rain was expected later in the day. Today would be mainly flat cycling except climbing one hill to 750 meters in the National Park Kozara. After 3 streets I had to climb a short steep hill, I guess over 15%…the street ending on the top in some stairs going down…The only solution was to cycle back down again and take another route, a good warming up exercise….. Once I left the city I cycled again most of the time on small roads, paved and unpaved. I also had some small hills in the beginning. On Komoot these seemed negligible but on of these hills, unpaved, was so steep that I was not able to cycle and had to push Black Horse some 50 meters to the top, not so much if Black Horse and package would not be around 50 Kilograms. Again a good warming  up…. After this climb the rest of the day the road would less or more flat untill Park Kozara. The scenery was nice again bu...

//Day 66 /16-05-22 /Doboj-Banja Luka

As I enjoyed cycling in Bosnia the last week I looked at the possibility to extend my path through Bosnia rather then to head to Croatia. The challenge that cycling the north of Bosnia or return to the coast would require some serious climbing. After some study work on Komoot I found a feasible route direction North allowing me to cycle two additional days in Bosnia. Today I would head to Banja Luka. Bosnia ( full name : Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH)) also includes the Republika Srpska, which is home of the Serbs living in BiH, and established as part of the Dayton agreements of 1995. Although Sarajevo is the capital of BiH, Banja Luka is the defacto capital of the Republika Srpska and Bosnian Serbs. The day after I will cycle to the city Dubica at the Croatian-BiH frontier through the National park Kozare. Both days will require  some climbing, today some 1600 meters, the day after 1200 with one climb to 800 meters, but all manageable… I plotted a route following small roads and pa...

/Day 86 /05 -06-22 /Halle-Gent (Home)

Pip the home-rabbit didn’t kill me. At least not yet, but I probably will as result of sleep deprivation. I learned the hard way that rabbits are nocturnal animals, during the night the Pip made a lot of noise drinking and scratching…Today a good rabbit is a rabbit in combination with prunes… After breakfast I left Hannah, Alec and Oscar around 9.00 and cycled to Dilbeek to pick up Maarten and Inge who would join me cycling to Gent. On the way to Dilbeek another friend, Jurriaan, informed me that he would join as well. For my last TBBCA cycling day the weather gods have foreseen most of the day rain  but eventually it was only the last 20 K that I needed to cycle in the rain. Not to to bad.  Thanks to Maarten leading the way we soon arrived in Schellebelle to say hello to another friend, Nico to have some refreshments and chocolate waffles….The last 20 K I cycled along the Schelde to home…I took the scenic route through the city center… and surprised the kids with my arrival…....
