//Day 72 /22-05-22 /Prebold-Ljubljana

As always I slept as a rose in my tent. I woke up early by the birds just past six but went sleeping around nine. Around 7 I made coffee and sipped it in my camping chair….Around 8 made a second coffee…..I had only 65 K to cycle to Ljubljana with checkin earliest at 14.00 so I was not in hurry. Since a couple of days my left knee is complaining sometimes so it was good it would be today a slow cycle day (tomorrow to bled it would be also a slow day with again only 60 K). I also mapped a route with the minimal of climbing with as results I would have to cycle some time on a secondary road but as it was Sunday I gambled it would not be to busy. I took my time to get ready and around  9.30 I paid the nice camping owner and started cycling. The only thing I forgot was to buy some breakfast yesterday as al the the shops and bakeries were closed today. Besides my coffee I had some half-melted leftover mini-chocolat cookies…When I woke up the sun was hiding behind the clouds, by the time I left the camping the sun was shining. Any way better then the rain which passed yesterday evening…..

The first hour I cycled on te by now known small roads through small farming villages. Sometimes I took an unpaved road connecting to villages. No cars but a lot of other cyclists on the road, locals at hey did carry any luggage …The secondary road as expected was not so busy, other cyclists but also a lot of motorcycles having fun on the curvy road and perfect black asphalt……

To get to Ljubljana I had to do some climbing but nothing significant. In addition I was rewarded. On the top of the small hill/mountain there was bakery specialised in a sort of “boule de Berlin” filled with either marmelade, vanilla cram, chocolat,….A lot of people queuing to get the goodies. The lady who served me  was not so happy with me when I said I did not need the plastic bag in which my single “boule de Berlin” was served, but my Boule de Berlin was super ; fresh, big, sugary, apricot marmelade,…the perfect but not so healthy breakfast.

The last 25 to Ljubljana was most of the time a descent….and soon I arrived at Ljubljana’s outskirts…I cycled through and office and light industrial area untill I was in the city center which I recognised from or family’s summer holiday last summer.

I was to early to check-in so I had a Radler on a nice terrace, it had become warm by know so I had a second. I checked-in had a shower and went into the city. In a place which I remember served great ice-cream I had a Yoghurt ice. I wanted to visit the Ljubljana castle as we did not visit it during our previous visits as it was to hot and the castle is located on top of a hill. It was also warm today but I discovered there is a airconditioned funiculaire which brings you for 3 euro without sweat to the top of the hill…

The castle has been fully renovated and is besides a castle also a gallery, museum and even jazz club….A lot of people but not to crowded. There was a sort of enactment going un with people dressed up medieval , the possibility for archery and do all kind of other middle-age things….like bying beer, lemonade and hamburgers….

I bought a limonade and walked  back down from the castle to the city center.  I strolled around, had a drink, and strolled some further.  As dinner I had a not so bad chicken Korma on a terrace along the river.

Today, again, was a chill day. Not a lot of cycling, relaxing, sightseeing,…tomorrow again cycling will be  limited. I will cycle to a camping at lake Bled some 65 K away. On the way I will pass a bikeshop to get some new tires for Black horse. The current ones could do another 1000 K but the price here is significant lower then in Belgium….I’m looking forward to camp again tomorrow and make my own dinner sitting in my camping chair in front of my tent……By Wednesday the weather will change with cooler temperatures, temperatures below 20’s, and more rain…cold if one but hope not to much rain as I plan to camp everyday untill home…

Lessons learned :

  • Great stuff an MSR stove functioning on gasoline.
  • Never new that castles had so much concrete in them.
  • Don’t put your text under a fruit tree if you want to avoid your tent to become sticky.

  3. Take care of your knee, you still have a bit of riding to do! Seems you had a nice and quiet day... enjoy it! Many, many moons ago I was on holiday in Bled... on a camping vacation!
Curious about the rest of your trip!

/Day 86 /05 -06-22 /Halle-Gent (Home)

Pip the home-rabbit didn’t kill me. At least not yet, but I probably will as result of sleep deprivation. I learned the hard way that rabbits are nocturnal animals, during the night the Pip made a lot of noise drinking and scratching…Today a good rabbit is a rabbit in combination with prunes… After breakfast I left Hannah, Alec and Oscar around 9.00 and cycled to Dilbeek to pick up Maarten and Inge who would join me cycling to Gent. On the way to Dilbeek another friend, Jurriaan, informed me that he would join as well. For my last TBBCA cycling day the weather gods have foreseen most of the day rain  but eventually it was only the last 20 K that I needed to cycle in the rain. Not to to bad.  Thanks to Maarten leading the way we soon arrived in Schellebelle to say hello to another friend, Nico to have some refreshments and chocolate waffles….The last 20 K I cycled along the Schelde to home…I took the scenic route through the city center… and surprised the kids with my arrival…....

/Day 85 /04 -06-22 /Remersdaal-Halle

The roosters of the nearby farm thought it was a good idea to wake me up at 5.15. I waited until 6.30 to get out of my bed and breaking up my tent. There was nothing to eat so early on the camping so I left on an empty stomach around 7.20. For the first time in 85 days I misread my GPS and started descending a road, unfortunate the wrong road…After I realised I took the wrong road I climbed the hill back up via an other road to eventually arrive on the correct cyclepath. Today I would cycle to Halle, 140 K away,  via the outskirts of Liege, through Limburg, Haspengouw, Heuvel land and “the green ring” around Brussel. I also passed Borgloon to say halo to Rudi, a docent of my art academy, who has a solo  exhibition  in the Graethempoort. It was great cycling most of the day ; mostly small roads, through fruit orchards, 2 bigger forests, great views, small villages. The closer I came to Brussels though the more I was confronted with the lack of decent and safe cycling infras...

/Day 83 /02-06-22 /Mainz-Remagen

Yesterday evening I had a dinner of aspargus and a schnitzel Wiener art…and as I was still hungry after,  Ice cream with chocolat milk, not sauce…my German needs improvement. I woke up early as it would be a another long ride of 140 K. When I packed I noticed my second battery was not charged. As it was a flat ride I should be able to cover the distance on 1 battery but my range anxiety was stronger than myself….I put my second battery in the charger and went in search for breakfast whilst the battery would load enough to satisfy my anxiety….. At 8.30, 1 hour later then planned but after a nice breakfast, I left Mainz. Today it  would be about following the Rhine, the weather would be great , the cycle path signposted and Loreley waiting for me…To get out of Mainz I passed an Industrial zone and some highways….but soon I was cycling along the Rhine.  There is much more traffic on the Rhine compared to the Danube ; a lot of river cruise boats, but also a lot of cargo ships...
