//Day 76 /26-05-22 /Bad Gastein-Salzburg

I left Bad Gastein around 8.It was grey and colder then expected and was happy to wear a fleece. Today I would be heading to Salzburg, mostly following the Alpe Adria Cycle route. I was lucky to pass by a bakery which was open. Everything was closed down, either as it was off-season or that someone took off some time ago on this day….





Today I followed most of the time the valley of the river Salzach, mountains and alps to the left and the right. Sometimes the valley was to narrow to have a dedicated cycle path and I need to cycle on the road, a rare exception in cycling walhalla Austria….
I passed the old town Hallein, where I had the best Amarena icecream in years….the Malaga was not so impressive. A lot of cyclists , most of them again heading opposite of me. 

During the day the weather improved, more sun, but the temperatures had clearly dropped. The last 20K I followed a busy cycle path along the river to arrive in Salzburg. I didn’t visit the city center today and although I doubted, I eventually decided to stay 2 nights in Salzburg and as result will have plenty of time to visit the city tomorrow. As it is a bank holiday the hotel prices in the city  were expensive and as the weather will be dry today and tomorrow I opted to camp.On Komoot I found a small camping 3 K out of the city center on top of a hill with a great view of Salzburg, the camping is called non surprisingly : Panorama Camping Stadtblick….A camping efficiently managed by a family. The type of camping where you still have to pay 2 euro / day to have Internet acces….

Today was a great cycling day, I really love the mountains. Tomorrow I will visit Salzburg, have some Mozart Kugeln and sing “So Long, Farewell” whilst driving with the bus from the camping site to the city center.



















Lessons learned :

  • WWI and WWII are not far away in Austria.
  • Belgium is around 10 cycle days away.

Yesterday evening a tired-looking young man arrived by bike and setup his tent next to mine. The theory of personal space was not something he mastered well, although plenty of space he placed his tent no more then 2 meters from mine. During the night strange sounds erupted out of the young man’s  tent ; a mix of farting, rambling through plastic bags, heavy sighing,….In the morning I friendly said hello but the only response was a short grunt… Today I planned to visit Salzburg and had a slow start with a lengthy breakfast of coffee and sandwiches with “schinken”…Around 10.15 I walked to the bus stop which conveniently connected the camping with Salzburg city center in 15 minutes, in addition the camping-lady explained me that today public transport was free…. //Day 10 /21-03-22 /Kecskemét-Szeged

I doubt that Hungary, the Hungarians  and I will ever become friends. The landlady of the pension where I stayed  last night was the exception of the rule on how I experienced the Hungarians the last week, she was  ; warm, interested, communicative, a visible ‘joie de vivre’ and a look to the broader world. I’m aware that it is not possible to build a correct view on people and a country based upon a brief cycle trough of a couple of days. I decided to run  a little test today to investigate the Hungarian social skills: I waved and said hello to every person I met - Roughly 75 % ignored me, 20 % actually looked me in the eye but did not give any further reaction and 5% waved back, or said hello - the test population was more then 100 people, with a mix of women and men. Rest my case. But it is  not only the people, it is also the landscape ; monotonous, flat, little or no trees, grey-brownish, crossed by electricity lines, straight lined roads, empty streets, …E...

//Day 67 /17-05-22 /Banja Luka-Dubica

I left beautiful Banja Luka after breakfast. I did it sleep that good due to late fire work….The sun was shining but rain was expected later in the day. Today would be mainly flat cycling except climbing one hill to 750 meters in the National Park Kozara. After 3 streets I had to climb a short steep hill, I guess over 15%…the street ending on the top in some stairs going down…The only solution was to cycle back down again and take another route, a good warming up exercise….. Once I left the city I cycled again most of the time on small roads, paved and unpaved. I also had some small hills in the beginning. On Komoot these seemed negligible but on of these hills, unpaved, was so steep that I was not able to cycle and had to push Black Horse some 50 meters to the top, not so much if Black Horse and package would not be around 50 Kilograms.
