//Day 78 /28-05-22 /Salzburg-Passau

After 78 days and 6987 kilometers I’m back in Passau…..
It rained all night and well into the morning. I packed camp in the rain but  succeeded to keep everything dry except my outer tent. I left te camping site In Salzburg around 10 in the morning, somewhat late as I had more then 110 K to cycle….

Komoot did it’s magic again…I cycled most of the day over small roads though the Austrian country only passing small farmer villages and once a bigger town…The mountains had been replaced by rolling hills going up and down over Austria. I enjoyed the ride and looking forward to ride all the way to home. Yesterday, after a lot of searching I was able to  book a train ticket which would bring me home on Sunday evening…to enjoy Sunday evening pizza with the family….but I realised that I’m not yet ready to stop cycling yet…I cancelled the ticket and plotted a cycling route to Gent instead.

One of the reasons, besides closing the loop in my head,  to head to Passau was the more positive weather forecast…during midday a shiny sun appeared, later in the afternoon it became really sunny but with a colder headwind out of the west..

I arrived around 4 in Passau. More people/tourists  in the city then when I left almost 3 months ago. Prices for hotelrooms had more then doubled as well…So I planned I would either stay at a camping near Passau or some 15 K out of the city direction Regensburg….I cycled through Passau, thinking  about the 7000 K I had cycled since I Ieft, had an ice cream (good Amarena / poor malaga) and eventually arrived at the nearby camp place. I decided to cycle to the other campsite, some 15 K further….Black Horse and me were tired when we arrived at campsite but it was a good decision.A restaurant, with schnitzel, and a nice camping.; I set up camp in a new time record of 30 minutes…I had a shower and not to bad schnitzel. Temperature dropped and I looked forward to my warm sleeping bag…At 21.15 most of the lights my camping neighbours were out…..Tomorrow I will head to Regensburg….

Lessons learned :
  • Mobile data in Austria is not champion league  quality..
  • I did not see any border between Austria and Germany
  • I can  pack camp in the rain.

/Day 86 /05 -06-22 /Halle-Gent (Home)

Pip the home-rabbit didn’t kill me. At least not yet, but I probably will as result of sleep deprivation. I learned the hard way that rabbits are nocturnal animals, during the night the Pip made a lot of noise drinking and scratching…Today a good rabbit is a rabbit in combination with prunes… After breakfast I left Hannah, Alec and Oscar around 9.00 and cycled to Dilbeek to pick up Maarten and Inge who would join me cycling to Gent. On the way to Dilbeek another friend, Jurriaan, informed me that he would join as well. For my last TBBCA cycling day the weather gods have foreseen most of the day rain  but eventually it was only the last 20 K that I needed to cycle in the rain. Not to to bad.  Thanks to Maarten leading the way we soon arrived in Schellebelle to say hello to another friend, Nico to have some refreshments and chocolate waffles….The last 20 K I cycled along the Schelde to home…I took the scenic route through the city center… and surprised the kids with my arrival…....

//Day 7 /18-03-22 /Bratislava-Komarno

Today I arrived in the sleepy bordertown called Komarno on the border of Slovakia and Hungary. The city has a Slovakian and Hungarian part (split by the Danube), the Slovakian part is mostly know for casino’s and XXX clubs based upon the posters on display when arriving from the Hungary, where I spend most of my time today.  This morning I left from Bratislava and crossed, after passing an area mainly consisting of apartments,  quite quickly the border with Hungary, when this happened was not directly clear to me (thank you Europe) except that when I wanted to buy food in a shop my euro’s were no longer accepted. I followed the Hungarian part of the EuroVelo 6, away from the Danube, most of the time I rode beside somewhat bigger roads on Europe sponsored cycleways. The cycleways are not the only infrastructure that are  sponsored by Europe, I passed new roads, bridges, industrial area’s all with posters contains a number in Hungarian currency and a European flag. I’m pret...

//the start

I n 2018  I ran from Ghent (my hometown in Belgium) to Santiago The Compostela in Spain .   An adventure which took 4 pair running shoes and 73 days of running to cover the 2700 km. The reasons for my Santiago adventure was the urge to complete a physical challenge (I could have opted for less healthy options to manage my  mid-life crisis), experience  the state of rural France after having seen a documentary on the topic and the need to disconnect from my day to day professional live.  During my trip I managed a blog with photos I took with my iPhone combined with personal observations on my day-to-day life as runner/traveller to Santiago. It was during this trip I discovered my interest in photography and shortly after my return I enrolled myself into the  Ghent academy for fine arts   to study photography. Around the end of 2020 I ...
