//Day 82 /01-06-22 /Wertheim-Mainz

Pff…after cycling 130 K with most of the time a strong headwind I arrived in Mainz. It had been a while that I had a so much headwind….I had planned to camp on the nearby camping but again the promised restaurant was not open I also didn’t want to eat pasta, ravioli or Hahne-topf…again.I checked booking and found a room in Mainz city center… which has plenty of restaurants to choose from.

The headwind took away most of the fun today, the route and and views where really nice. I followed some part of the day the Main and when cutting a bend of the Main river I cycled though a beautiful forest and a cycle path through fields and small villages..I also passed the nice town Darmstadt. It would have been a great cycle day wasn’t for the headwind….

When I cycled along the Main river a man stopped me…He signed me to follow him and explained that he wanted his photo taken….he had just catches a big fish and wanted proof of the catch….he had an old mobile phone and it took some time to make his picture…I took the man’s picture but he was not happy with 1 photo he posed in different ways and eventually I think I had to take almost 20 photo’s before the fisherman/model was happy…..

Most of the small villages I passed at the Main river are now protected by concrete walls against flooding. I had seen the same when cycling the Donau..Complete villages surrounded by a concrete wall able to be sealed of by big steel gates and doors. I also passed a shipyard which was still in operation, quite impression to see how big river boats are today.

The weather today was also great (except the headwind) blue sky, big white clouds and warm, even hot later in the day…and it was good to ride sometime through a forest…when I exited the forest the view over the valley below was stunning….Until Mainz I cycled though beautiful landscape, descending to the river Mainz again. It is also asparagus and strawberry season in the region I passed a lot of farm which cultivate both and selling their products in small stalls along the road.

The last 10 KI cycled again along the Mainz. First to the camping with the closed restaurant and afterwards on the other side to Mainz city center. Mainz is located at the confluence of the Main and the Rhine. It is not a small town and the pedestrian city center, with it’s market place, cathedral, terraces and shops attracts a lot of people. I checked-in in my hotel and strolled around in the city and had a big Radler (it was really warm) and a nice ice cream….
This evening I may opt to have dinner of Aspargus which is served in a lot of restaurants with sauce hollandaise, potatoes and a small Wiener Schnitzel…

Tomorrow I will cycle along the Rhine to a camping in Remagen, just below Bonn, some 140 K. I hope Loreley will not seduce me and that I safely  arrive at my destination. Even more I hope there will be no headwind…and that the restaurant at the camping will be operational.

Lessons learned :
  • Old fisherman - more demanding then Kate Moss on coke.
  • You can smell when nearing a strawberry farm…the air seems to be full of strawberry.

//the start

I n 2018  I ran from Ghent (my hometown in Belgium) to Santiago The Compostela in Spain .   An adventure which took 4 pair running shoes and 73 days of running to cover the 2700 km. The reasons for my Santiago adventure was the urge to complete a physical challenge (I could have opted for less healthy options to manage my  mid-life crisis), experience  the state of rural France after having seen a documentary on the topic and the need to disconnect from my day to day professional live.  During my trip I managed a blog with photos I took with my iPhone combined with personal observations on my day-to-day life as runner/traveller to Santiago. It was during this trip I discovered my interest in photography and shortly after my return I enrolled myself into the  Ghent academy for fine arts   to study photography. Around the end of 2020 I ...

//Day 1 /12-03-22 /Ghent - Passau

It was with little sleep I got out of bed this morning. From 2 o’clock in the morning I was a in semi-awake state only to fall back asleep again 5 minutes before I had the set alarm clock. Today, I would finally leave my home and family to start my long planned cycle tour though the Balkans. With a heavy heart I said goodbye to Jo and the kids and to Eric and Katrien (who came to wave me goodbye, real friends Jan) and stepped into the car of Wim which would bring me to Ko ln to take the direct train to Passau. Thanks to  Germany’s efficient and  modern train infrastructure I was soon waiting on the platform to board the train to Vienna. The train was 6 minutes late so not sure if german efficiency is still a thing.  I’m writing this blog whilst riding a comfortable train through sunny Germany looking at a landscape slowly changing from hilly to flat to hilly again. Besides the changing landscape I’m observing the other travellers typing on their smartphones,  listeni...

//Day 18/29-03-22 /Negotin-Vidin

I needed to cycle only 65 K today, from Nigotin to Vidin, a small city near the border with Romania in Bulgaria. So I stayed in bed until 8.30, made an espresso and sat on the terras of my chalet-studio. Bojan, the owner/host, promised me he would arrange breakfast around 8.30. Around 9.00 he brought me a filo based  pastry filled with a green vegetable (which I did not know) and cheese, real espresso and some fresh orange based limonade/juice. All was perfect again, totally in line with the level of service received since I arrived at Bojan’s place. After breakfast I slowly packed and was ready to roll around 10.15. Bojan asked if he could join me to the border and taking me via a route through the hills to the border. I happily accepted. I was somewhat surprised that for my stay, the welcome beer and breakfast the cost was only 14 euro. I would have paid without any questioning the double.  The plan was to go to Vidin, Bulgaria , and tomorrow follow the Romanian Eurovelo 6 r...
