//Day 81 /31-05-22 /Wintersdorf-Wertheim

I woke up and started cyling early. At 7.30 I was on the road. I had packed my wet tent (no rain) and bought at 7.25  breakfast from the mobile bakery which visited the camping. The sky was blue and sun shining. Today would be all around cycling, 150 K in distance and 1000 meters to climb.

Today’s  summary : First 50 K climbing through rural Germany (small villages and big fields), Next 50 K flat cycling along the Main 50 K, Last 50 K, one big climb and all the rest cycling down (though a rural area again)  to Wertheim located at the Main river. I cycled most of the time small cycle paths with very few people to be seen (except when I cycled along the Mainz river). Wertheim is a nice small village with the typical half-timbered houses around a central market square..Today had been a great but long ride….

When I arrived in Wertheim I had a not to bad Amarena/Malaga ice cream…one of the better ice creams I had the last 3 months. I left the Disney town square and headed the last kilometers to the camping. The camping’s website had informed me that it had a restaurant…when I arrived I was informed that until June the restaurant only operated during the weekend….It would have been handy if this info was also shared on the website…The friendly receptionist informed me there was a shop some 10 minutes away. I also needed to get some fuel for my stove so Black Horse and I rode another couple of kilometres to buy  dinner and fuel. In the Lidl-like shop I bought a can of Pasta-chicken soup, which turned out not to be bad, some fruit and crisps….

I setup camp, had a shower just in time for an aperitif  of with white wine and crisps…As mentioned the dinner out of teh can was not to bad…..

It was a long but great cycling day and as result will probably sleep as a rose. Tomorrow I cycle to a camping near the city of Mainz some 125  kilometers away.

Lessons learned :
  • Black Horse will be happy to be home - he starts making weird sounds sometimes…
  • A hairdryer is a useful instrument to do laundry.
  • Hand soap is not an efficient detergent.

/Day 86 /05 -06-22 /Halle-Gent (Home)

Pip the home-rabbit didn’t kill me. At least not yet, but I probably will as result of sleep deprivation. I learned the hard way that rabbits are nocturnal animals, during the night the Pip made a lot of noise drinking and scratching…Today a good rabbit is a rabbit in combination with prunes… After breakfast I left Hannah, Alec and Oscar around 9.00 and cycled to Dilbeek to pick up Maarten and Inge who would join me cycling to Gent. On the way to Dilbeek another friend, Jurriaan, informed me that he would join as well. For my last TBBCA cycling day the weather gods have foreseen most of the day rain  but eventually it was only the last 20 K that I needed to cycle in the rain. Not to to bad.  Thanks to Maarten leading the way we soon arrived in Schellebelle to say hello to another friend, Nico to have some refreshments and chocolate waffles….The last 20 K I cycled along the Schelde to home…I took the scenic route through the city center… and surprised the kids with my arrival…....

//Day 7 /18-03-22 /Bratislava-Komarno

Today I arrived in the sleepy bordertown called Komarno on the border of Slovakia and Hungary. The city has a Slovakian and Hungarian part (split by the Danube), the Slovakian part is mostly know for casino’s and XXX clubs based upon the posters on display when arriving from the Hungary, where I spend most of my time today.  This morning I left from Bratislava and crossed, after passing an area mainly consisting of apartments,  quite quickly the border with Hungary, when this happened was not directly clear to me (thank you Europe) except that when I wanted to buy food in a shop my euro’s were no longer accepted. I followed the Hungarian part of the EuroVelo 6, away from the Danube, most of the time I rode beside somewhat bigger roads on Europe sponsored cycleways. The cycleways are not the only infrastructure that are  sponsored by Europe, I passed new roads, bridges, industrial area’s all with posters contains a number in Hungarian currency and a European flag. I’m pret...

//the start

I n 2018  I ran from Ghent (my hometown in Belgium) to Santiago The Compostela in Spain .   An adventure which took 4 pair running shoes and 73 days of running to cover the 2700 km. The reasons for my Santiago adventure was the urge to complete a physical challenge (I could have opted for less healthy options to manage my  mid-life crisis), experience  the state of rural France after having seen a documentary on the topic and the need to disconnect from my day to day professional live.  During my trip I managed a blog with photos I took with my iPhone combined with personal observations on my day-to-day life as runner/traveller to Santiago. It was during this trip I discovered my interest in photography and shortly after my return I enrolled myself into the  Ghent academy for fine arts   to study photography. Around the end of 2020 I ...
