//Day 81 /31-05-22 /Wintersdorf-Wertheim

I woke up and started cyling early. At 7.30 I was on the road. I had packed my wet tent (no rain) and bought at 7.25  breakfast from the mobile bakery which visited the camping. The sky was blue and sun shining. Today would be all around cycling, 150 K in distance and 1000 meters to climb.

Today’s  summary : First 50 K climbing through rural Germany (small villages and big fields), Next 50 K flat cycling along the Main 50 K, Last 50 K, one big climb and all the rest cycling down (though a rural area again)  to Wertheim located at the Main river. I cycled most of the time small cycle paths with very few people to be seen (except when I cycled along the Mainz river). Wertheim is a nice small village with the typical half-timbered houses around a central market square..Today had been a great but long ride….

When I arrived in Wertheim I had a not to bad Amarena/Malaga ice cream…one of the better ice creams I had the last 3 months. I left the Disney town square and headed the last kilometers to the camping. The camping’s website had informed me that it had a restaurant…when I arrived I was informed that until June the restaurant only operated during the weekend….It would have been handy if this info was also shared on the website…The friendly receptionist informed me there was a shop some 10 minutes away. I also needed to get some fuel for my stove so Black Horse and I rode another couple of kilometres to buy  dinner and fuel. In the Lidl-like shop I bought a can of Pasta-chicken soup, which turned out not to be bad, some fruit and crisps….

I setup camp, had a shower just in time for an aperitif  of with white wine and crisps…As mentioned the dinner out of teh can was not to bad…..

It was a long but great cycling day and as result will probably sleep as a rose. Tomorrow I cycle to a camping near the city of Mainz some 125  kilometers away.

Lessons learned :
  • Black Horse will be happy to be home - he starts making weird sounds sometimes…
  • A hairdryer is a useful instrument to do laundry.
  • Hand soap is not an efficient detergent.

//Day 67 /17-05-22 /Banja Luka-Dubica

I left beautiful Banja Luka after breakfast. I did it sleep that good due to late fire work….The sun was shining but rain was expected later in the day. Today would be mainly flat cycling except climbing one hill to 750 meters in the National Park Kozara. After 3 streets I had to climb a short steep hill, I guess over 15%…the street ending on the top in some stairs going down…The only solution was to cycle back down again and take another route, a good warming up exercise….. Once I left the city I cycled again most of the time on small roads, paved and unpaved. I also had some small hills in the beginning. On Komoot these seemed negligible but on of these hills, unpaved, was so steep that I was not able to cycle and had to push Black Horse some 50 meters to the top, not so much if Black Horse and package would not be around 50 Kilograms. Again a good warming  up…. After this climb the rest of the day the road would less or more flat untill Park Kozara. The scenery was nice again bu...

//Day 66 /16-05-22 /Doboj-Banja Luka

As I enjoyed cycling in Bosnia the last week I looked at the possibility to extend my path through Bosnia rather then to head to Croatia. The challenge that cycling the north of Bosnia or return to the coast would require some serious climbing. After some study work on Komoot I found a feasible route direction North allowing me to cycle two additional days in Bosnia. Today I would head to Banja Luka. Bosnia ( full name : Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH)) also includes the Republika Srpska, which is home of the Serbs living in BiH, and established as part of the Dayton agreements of 1995. Although Sarajevo is the capital of BiH, Banja Luka is the defacto capital of the Republika Srpska and Bosnian Serbs. The day after I will cycle to the city Dubica at the Croatian-BiH frontier through the National park Kozare. Both days will require  some climbing, today some 1600 meters, the day after 1200 with one climb to 800 meters, but all manageable… I plotted a route following small roads and pa...

//Day 50 /30-04-22 /Menidi-Igoumenitsa

I woke earlier then my alarm clock. But would only be really awake when a MF dog surprised me when I was 30 minutes cycling on a small road. The lady-hotel owner was really motherly when I said I did not take a breakfast (at 8 euro not really market conform) and  gave me a fruit juice and, some cake and 2 boiled eggs. I saddled Black Horse and started cycling passing the 3 lazy hotel watchdogs . I cycled to the beach and had a cake and 2 boiled egg breakfast.  Not a lot happened today except that the cycling today was great. I did 130K , of which a big part on small unpaved roads and no people to be seen. The first 50K was somewhat flat afterwards I had to cross the mountains to reach the coast. Luckily I passed a small town before so I had a sandwich and bought some cookies as lunch. The unpaved roads, often with steep climbs, where challenging but really great. The views well… Plotting a route on a map involves always some unknown factors : roads that only exist on paper, a ...
