/Day 85 /04 -06-22 /Remersdaal-Halle

The roosters of the nearby farm thought it was a good idea to wake me up at 5.15. I waited until 6.30 to get out of my bed and breaking up my tent. There was nothing to eat so early on the camping so I left on an empty stomach around 7.20. For the first time in 85 days I misread my GPS and started descending a road, unfortunate the wrong road…After I realised I took the wrong road I climbed the hill back up via an other road to eventually arrive on the correct cyclepath.

Today I would cycle to Halle, 140 K away,  via the outskirts of Liege, through Limburg, Haspengouw, Heuvel land and “the green ring” around Brussel. I also passed Borgloon to say halo to Rudi, a docent of my art academy, who has a solo exhibition in the Graethempoort.

It was great cycling most of the day ; mostly small roads, through fruit orchards, 2 bigger forests, great views, small villages.The closer I came to Brussels though the more I was confronted with the lack of decent and safe cycling infrastructure …cycling on poor roads along busy roads, cycle paths that suddenly disappear, car doors that are thrown open,…compared to most countries I cycled the last months Belgium will  not  be in the top 5.

It became also warm/hot today. Around noon it was 26 degrees easily. Although the sometimes poor cycling infrastructure and the warm weather I made good progress and I arrived around 16.00 in Halle at the door of Hannah’s apartment..
It was good to see each other again, although Oscar was not so convinced……After a shower we went to Halle city to have an Ice cream….Great ice cream in Halle…
We had early dinner and around nine it was time to go to sleep.This night I will have the company of the house - rabbit Pip. I hope Pip has not seen Monty Python’s The Holy Grail….

Tomorrow I will cycle to Dilbeek, Schellebelle and further….heavy rain is expected….

Lessons learned :
  • The camping restaurant was really good and clearly deserve the best camping-restaurant of the year
  • The cherries are almost ripe.

//Day 77 /27-05-22 /Salzburg

Yesterday evening a tired-looking young man arrived by bike and setup his tent next to mine. The theory of personal space was not something he mastered well, although plenty of space he placed his tent no more then 2 meters from mine. During the night strange sounds erupted out of the young man’s  tent ; a mix of farting, rambling through plastic bags, heavy sighing,….In the morning I friendly said hello but the only response was a short grunt… Today I planned to visit Salzburg and had a slow start with a lengthy breakfast of coffee and sandwiches with “schinken”…Around 10.15 I walked to the bus stop which conveniently connected the camping with Salzburg city center in 15 minutes, in addition the camping-lady explained me that today public transport was free…. I got of the bus at Salzburg Old Marktplatz and headed to the Salzburg’s Museum der Moderne , the modern Art Museum, to visit 2 exhibitions. The first a solo exhibition of Richard Kriesche and the second a photo exhibition of...

//Day 10 /21-03-22 /Kecskemét-Szeged

I doubt that Hungary, the Hungarians  and I will ever become friends. The landlady of the pension where I stayed  last night was the exception of the rule on how I experienced the Hungarians the last week, she was  ; warm, interested, communicative, a visible ‘joie de vivre’ and a look to the broader world. I’m aware that it is not possible to build a correct view on people and a country based upon a brief cycle trough of a couple of days. I decided to run  a little test today to investigate the Hungarian social skills: I waved and said hello to every person I met - Roughly 75 % ignored me, 20 % actually looked me in the eye but did not give any further reaction and 5% waved back, or said hello - the test population was more then 100 people, with a mix of women and men. Rest my case. But it is  not only the people, it is also the landscape ; monotonous, flat, little or no trees, grey-brownish, crossed by electricity lines, straight lined roads, empty streets, …E...

//Day 66 /16-05-22 /Doboj-Banja Luka

As I enjoyed cycling in Bosnia the last week I looked at the possibility to extend my path through Bosnia rather then to head to Croatia. The challenge that cycling the north of Bosnia or return to the coast would require some serious climbing. After some study work on Komoot I found a feasible route direction North allowing me to cycle two additional days in Bosnia. Today I would head to Banja Luka. Bosnia ( full name : Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH)) also includes the Republika Srpska, which is home of the Serbs living in BiH, and established as part of the Dayton agreements of 1995. Although Sarajevo is the capital of BiH, Banja Luka is the defacto capital of the Republika Srpska and Bosnian Serbs. The day after I will cycle to the city Dubica at the Croatian-BiH frontier through the National park Kozare. Both days will require  some climbing, today some 1600 meters, the day after 1200 with one climb to 800 meters, but all manageable… I plotted a route following small roads and pa...
