//Day 1 /12-03-22 /Ghent - Passau

It was with little sleep I got out of bed this morning. From 2 o’clock in the morning I was a in semi-awake state only to fall back asleep again 5 minutes before I had the set alarm clock. Today, I would finally leave my home and family to start my long planned cycle tour though the Balkans.

With a heavy heart I said goodbye to Jo and the kids and to Eric and Katrien (who came to wave me goodbye, real friends Jan) and stepped into the car of Wim which would bring me to Koln to take the direct train to Passau. Thanks to  Germany’s efficient and  modern train infrastructure I was soon waiting on the platform to board the train to Vienna. The train was 6 minutes late so not sure if german efficiency is still a thing.

I’m writing this blog whilst riding a comfortable train through sunny Germany looking at a landscape slowly changing from hilly to flat to hilly again. Besides the changing landscape I’m observing the other travellers typing on their smartphones,  listening to a Belgian radio station on my own smartphone, answering a whatsapp message from a friend when I suddenly  hear 2 rows behind me a Russian speaking lady uttering the word “Ukraine” in a phone conversation. The word “Ukraine”  brings me back to the reality of today that although our world has never been more connected  through internet and scientific progress in general it is still possible for Putin to start a war in Ukraine, have an increasing  East-West tension, make only slow progress addressing global warming, politicians and civilians who seems no longer able to connect….. just at that moment James Taylor starts singing “You’ve got a friend” on the radio as to remind  me that not all is lost and that I’m lucky to have a great wife, kids, a grandchild and lot of friends. Restoring (at least for now) my believe in humanity.

The train moves forward, the landscape continues to change, castles pass by,  the train conductor announces and apologies that we have arrived 11 minutes to early in the next train station. Not only my believe in humanity is restored but also German efficiency. Tomorrow I will cycle. A sunny day is expected. This evening I will eat a Wiener Schnitzel. Not all seems lost indeed.

Song of today : You’ve got a friend - Live at the troubadours 2007 /Carole King and James Taylor (No need to choose between the Carole King and James Taylor version).

Lessons leaned today :
  1. Zeppelins are no longer the big airships of the past.
  2. Wim is at heart a Bulgarian taxi driver.
  3. If you ever take the train from Koln to Vienna best to sit at the left side of the compartment if you want to see the Rhine.

//Day 77 /27-05-22 /Salzburg

Yesterday evening a tired-looking young man arrived by bike and setup his tent next to mine. The theory of personal space was not something he mastered well, although plenty of space he placed his tent no more then 2 meters from mine. During the night strange sounds erupted out of the young man’s  tent ; a mix of farting, rambling through plastic bags, heavy sighing,….In the morning I friendly said hello but the only response was a short grunt… Today I planned to visit Salzburg and had a slow start with a lengthy breakfast of coffee and sandwiches with “schinken”…Around 10.15 I walked to the bus stop which conveniently connected the camping with Salzburg city center in 15 minutes, in addition the camping-lady explained me that today public transport was free…. I got of the bus at Salzburg Old Marktplatz and headed to the Salzburg’s Museum der Moderne , the modern Art Museum, to visit 2 exhibitions. The first a solo exhibition of Richard Kriesche and the second a photo exhibition of...

//Day 10 /21-03-22 /Kecskemét-Szeged

I doubt that Hungary, the Hungarians  and I will ever become friends. The landlady of the pension where I stayed  last night was the exception of the rule on how I experienced the Hungarians the last week, she was  ; warm, interested, communicative, a visible ‘joie de vivre’ and a look to the broader world. I’m aware that it is not possible to build a correct view on people and a country based upon a brief cycle trough of a couple of days. I decided to run  a little test today to investigate the Hungarian social skills: I waved and said hello to every person I met - Roughly 75 % ignored me, 20 % actually looked me in the eye but did not give any further reaction and 5% waved back, or said hello - the test population was more then 100 people, with a mix of women and men. Rest my case. But it is  not only the people, it is also the landscape ; monotonous, flat, little or no trees, grey-brownish, crossed by electricity lines, straight lined roads, empty streets, …E...

//Day 67 /17-05-22 /Banja Luka-Dubica

I left beautiful Banja Luka after breakfast. I did it sleep that good due to late fire work….The sun was shining but rain was expected later in the day. Today would be mainly flat cycling except climbing one hill to 750 meters in the National Park Kozara. After 3 streets I had to climb a short steep hill, I guess over 15%…the street ending on the top in some stairs going down…The only solution was to cycle back down again and take another route, a good warming up exercise….. Once I left the city I cycled again most of the time on small roads, paved and unpaved. I also had some small hills in the beginning. On Komoot these seemed negligible but on of these hills, unpaved, was so steep that I was not able to cycle and had to push Black Horse some 50 meters to the top, not so much if Black Horse and package would not be around 50 Kilograms. Again a good warming  up…. After this climb the rest of the day the road would less or more flat untill Park Kozara. The scenery was nice again bu...
