//Day 79 /29-05-22 /Passau-Regensburg

It was a cold when I went to sleep but nothing my -12 sleeping bag couldn’t handle. Later in the night there was some light rain. I woke at 6…To early to break up camp (most campings expect one should not make noice between 22 and 7). At 7 I made breakfast and started breakup camp. Today would be a rather long ride of 140 K to Regensburg, luckily with no climbing along the road. Most of the day I would follow the Danube. When I left the camping , which had an operational phone cel…, it was grey and fleece-level cold….
As it was a Sunday there were no people in the street of the villages and all was closed. I had bought some lunch yesterday. The views were not to bad but nothing to get exited about. On the left sometimes the Danube on the right a country landscape with in the distance some hills….Most cyclists I met came again out of the opposite direction although at a lower volume then the previous days. Yesterday I had briefly spoken with a French cyclist which I met again today. Serge, from Brest and 65 years was heading to France. He had a lot gear with him, so much that he pulled a trailer. His tent was big enough to park his bike and the trailer besides himself, he had also a table with him, a luxury which is a step to far for me….We cycled some time together whilst he explained he used to be in the French Marine as a submarine officer…He said me a couple of  times that I should cycle along if he was going to slow, the 3rd time I took his cue and left Serge behind….

I was heading to camping in Regensburg. After cycling 25 against a strong headwind I was happy to arrive in Regensburg. Prior to head to the camping I cycled into the city. A lot of tourists…visiting the old and beautiful city center of Regensburg. The city has a reasonable size (150000 habitants) and is the fourth largest city of Bavarian. The center has maintained his medieval character : old restored buildings , fully pedestrian, nice hotels, restaurants, bars, designer shops…..Sleeping in my tent on a camping 5 kilometers out of the city suddenly didn’t look so inviting anymore…I checked booking and found a hotel at “reasonable”price nearby. The rate offered directly by the hotel was even more reasonable (including breakfast) , I checked in, did some laundry, showered and strolled the city…Regensburg is really a nice town and definitely “vaut le voyage” material…

The hotel I’m staying has a nice Bavarian restaurant where I plan to have dinner…It will be an early night as the 140 kilometres I cycled today, including headwind and some unexpected detours had made me tired. Tomorrow I will cycle to Nürnberg only 117 K away but some climbing to do….Nürnberg, the second largest Bavarian city, has a restored medieval center (re-done after WWII - as it was completely bombed away) and known for the trials after WWII….

Lessons learned :
  • Austrians are the “Joop Zoetemelks” of the tourist cyclists - they do not take there turn to take the lead against headwind.
  • Somewhere today I passed a Greek looking building - the Walhalla - a hall of fame.
  • German headwind…pffff…

/Day 86 /05 -06-22 /Halle-Gent (Home)

Pip the home-rabbit didn’t kill me. At least not yet, but I probably will as result of sleep deprivation. I learned the hard way that rabbits are nocturnal animals, during the night the Pip made a lot of noise drinking and scratching…Today a good rabbit is a rabbit in combination with prunes… After breakfast I left Hannah, Alec and Oscar around 9.00 and cycled to Dilbeek to pick up Maarten and Inge who would join me cycling to Gent. On the way to Dilbeek another friend, Jurriaan, informed me that he would join as well. For my last TBBCA cycling day the weather gods have foreseen most of the day rain  but eventually it was only the last 20 K that I needed to cycle in the rain. Not to to bad.  Thanks to Maarten leading the way we soon arrived in Schellebelle to say hello to another friend, Nico to have some refreshments and chocolate waffles….The last 20 K I cycled along the Schelde to home…I took the scenic route through the city center… and surprised the kids with my arrival…....

/Day 85 /04 -06-22 /Remersdaal-Halle

The roosters of the nearby farm thought it was a good idea to wake me up at 5.15. I waited until 6.30 to get out of my bed and breaking up my tent. There was nothing to eat so early on the camping so I left on an empty stomach around 7.20. For the first time in 85 days I misread my GPS and started descending a road, unfortunate the wrong road…After I realised I took the wrong road I climbed the hill back up via an other road to eventually arrive on the correct cyclepath. Today I would cycle to Halle, 140 K away,  via the outskirts of Liege, through Limburg, Haspengouw, Heuvel land and “the green ring” around Brussel. I also passed Borgloon to say halo to Rudi, a docent of my art academy, who has a solo  exhibition  in the Graethempoort. It was great cycling most of the day ; mostly small roads, through fruit orchards, 2 bigger forests, great views, small villages.The closer I came to Brussels though the more I was confronted with the lack of decent and safe cycling infras...

/Day 83 /02-06-22 /Mainz-Remagen

Yesterday evening I had a dinner of aspargus and a schnitzel Wiener art…and as I was still hungry after,  Ice cream with chocolat milk, not sauce…my German needs improvement. I woke up early as it would be a another long ride of 140 K. When I packed I noticed my second battery was not charged. As it was a flat ride I should be able to cover the distance on 1 battery but my range anxiety was stronger than myself….I put my second battery in the charger and went in search for breakfast whilst the battery would load enough to satisfy my anxiety….. At 8.30, 1 hour later then planned but after a nice breakfast, I left Mainz. Today it  would be about following the Rhine, the weather would be great , the cycle path signposted and Loreley waiting for me…To get out of Mainz I passed an Industrial zone and some highways….but soon I was cycling along the Rhine.  There is much more traffic on the Rhine compared to the Danube ; a lot of river cruise boats, but also a lot of cargo ships...
